HOW A CNC MILLING MACHINE WORKS

In a physical sense, CNC milling machines work like a drill. With your workpiece fastened on the table, the spinning cutting tool advances towards the workpiece to cut through and remove the material.

With computer programming to control the CNC milling machine, you need to produce a CAD (computer-aided design) file. The CAD file helps the machine locate the area and cut the desired shape as requested.

STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data) is a common CAD file format. Other CAD file formats include 3DM, DWG, DXF, IGES, IPT, SAT, SLDPRT and X_T.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CNC MILLING MACHINES

There are different types of CNC milling machines depending on your requirements. These requirements include your machined part dimensions, shape and design complexity and overall need for accuracy.

  1. Vertical Milling Machine

A vertical CNC milling machine has the spindle and cutting tool running vertically, cutting straight as the table moves the workpiece from front to back and side to side.

  1. Horizontal Milling Machine

With the same function as a vertical milling machine, a horizontal CNC milling machine cuts the workpiece horizontally instead of vertically. Ideal for cutting along the length of the workpiece.

  1. Gantry Milling Machine

Gantry milling machines are larger with a bridge-structure shape to cut heavy-duty applications.

Within these three core categories, you can have multi-axis milling machines that expand the capacity for movement. Generally, the more axes available, the more complex cutting you can create. So, if you have a complex project, maybe opt for a four or five-axis on your CNC milling machine.

HOW TO OPERATE A CNC MILLING MACHINE?

Here’s a brief overview of what operating a CNC milling machine looks like. But before we begin, ensure you review the safety precautions and wear the appropriate safety gear, such as goggles, gloves, and a protective apron.

  1. Load the Programme

After powering up the machine, you can use the interface to load your CAD file, which has the specific part you intend to mill. In this program, you should have the instructions for the CNC milling machine to follow.

  1. Choose Tools

With your project in mind, pick the most appropriate cutting tool for the job and insert it into the spindle. Ensure the blade is fastened securely before setting the correct tool length.

  1. Workpiece Setup

Align and level your workpiece on the CNC milling machine table before securing it using clamps, vices, or fixtures.

  1. Establish WCS

Define the work coordinate system (WCS) with the workpiece origin (zero point) corresponding with the jog controls and touch probe.

  1. Offset Tools

Use the tool offset function to measure and adjust tool positions if necessary.

  1. Begin Milling

Now you’re all set up, execute your CAD file and start milling, keeping an eye on the workpiece for any unlikely issues. Once you’ve finished milling, you may want to quality-check your workpiece with measuring tools like callipers or micrometres to assess the size, shape, and finish are all as intended.
